The Irish police (Garda) plan to use AI to analyze footage, focusing on recognizing objects such as clothing, vehicles, and bags, rather than recognizing faces.
The approach will allow suspects to be identified more quickly based on visual clues from existing footage. A digital evidence management system is also being developed to store large amounts of footage and make it easier for citizens to submit images and videos relevant to investigations.
The move reflects international practice and has not yet faced legal challenges in Ireland.
